New Executives Elected

Handing over of mantle

The Ghana Geotechnical Society (GGS)/International Geosynthetic Society, Ghana chapter (GhIGS) met on 5th September 2019 for the official handing over of Executive mantle. This gesture was preceded by brief introduction of GGS and GhIGS by Professor Ampadu. Thereafter, Ing. Joseph Oddei led the discussion on an emerging trend due to the rapid urbanization or rezoning of Accra City. The trend is Deep Excavation to cater for high rise buildings including basement. The discussion centred on geotechnical engineers being cautious during investigation and design of such a system. They were made aware of the legality involve in such construction due to effect on adjacent properties.

There came the handing over session!! Professor Ampadu (the immediate President for the two Societies) did the honours to the newly elected Presidents. The new executives are as follows:

For GGS

  • Vice President (Southern Rep) – Ing. Michael Obeng-Konadu
  • Secretary – Ing. Dr. Owusu Nimo
  • Treasurer – Ing. Dr. Patrick Bekoe
  • Northern Rep – Ing. Felix Jojo Ayeh
  • Student Rep – Samuella Boadu

For GhIGS

  • President – Ing. Joseph Kwesi Oddei
  • Vice President (Southern Rep) – Ing. Michael Obeng-Konadu
  • Secretary – Ing. Dr. Owusu Nimo
  • Treasurer – Ing. Dr. Patrick Bekoe
  • Northern Rep – Ing. Felix Jojo Ayeh
  • Student Rep – Samuella Boadu

The climax of the meeting touched on discussions to make the societies more effective and efficient. Various suggestions were put across. These include, mentorship, technical sessions, flow of information on the websites among others.
